New Delhi: The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India and Mahindra & Mahindra on Wednesday reported rise in their domestic sales in December, even as Hyundai and Totoya posted negative growth.
Beating the year-end blues Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said its domestic sales were at 1,24,375 units in December as against 1,21,479 units in the same month a year ago, registering a growth of 2.4 per cent.
The company said its compact segment comprising New WagonR, Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, Dzire recorded sales of 65,673 units last month as compared to 51,346 units in December 2018, a growth of 27.9 per cent.
Sales of utility vehicles, including Gypsy, Ertiga, XL6, S-Cross and Vitara Brezza, were at 23,808 units as compared to 20,225 units in the same month in 2018, a growth of 17.7 per cent.
However, the mini segment comprising Alto, S-Presso and Old WagonR witnessed a decline of 13.6 per cent at 23,883 units as compared to 27,649 units in December 2018.
Mahindra & Mahindra also posted domestic sales of 37,081 units in December as compared to 36,690 units in the same month previous year, up 1 per cent.
"Our performance in the month of December is as per year end sales outlook and currently we are also comfortable with our overall stock levels," M&M Chief of Sales and Marketing, Automotive Division Veejay Ram Nakra said.
He further said, "as we get into the new year, we are fully equipped to roll out our BS-VI products and have taken all requisite measures for a smooth transition over the next three months."
Hyundai said its domestic sales were at 37,953 units in December 2019 as compared to 42,093 units in the same month previous year, down 9.8 per cent.
Domestic sales last year were at 510,260 units as against 550,002 units in 2018, a decline of 7.2 per cent, it added.
Commenting on the sales performance, HMIL Director Sales, Marketing and Service Tarung Garg said, "the year 2019 has been a challenging year for the Indian automotive industry. Even in such adverse conditions, Hyundai Motor India as committed has launched 4 new benchmark products in different segments."
Toyota Kirloskar Motor's domestic sales in December 2019 stood at 6,544 units as compared to 11,836 units in the same month in 2018, down 45 per cent.
The company said its domestic sales in 2019, stood at 1,26,701 units in 2019 as compared to 1,51,480 units in 2018, down 16.36 per cent, the company said.
"We are happy that there has been a continued positive retail sales momentum despite the overall slowdown in the industry. We currently don't cater to the entire market with our products, although the segments we represent have shown de-growth of around 22 per cent, yet our de-growth as compared to the segment has been much lesser," Toyota Kirloskar Motor Senior Vice President, Sales and Service Naveen Soni said.
MG Motor India reported retail sales of 3,021 units in December 2019.
"As a new entrant in the Indian market, the robust sales momentum of our first offering, the HECTOR, has been very encouraging. Tata Motors reported a 12 per cent decline in total vehicle sales in domestic market to 44,254 units in December. The company had sold 50,440 units in the same month in 2018, Tata Motors said in a statement.
Total passenger vehicle sales last month stood at 12,785 units as against 14,260 units in the same month previous year, down 10 per cent, it added. Tata Motors said its commercial vehicle sales in December 2019 stood at 34,082 units as against 40,015 units in the year-ago month, down 15 per cent.
Nissan Motor India reported a 49 per cent rise in its domestic sales at 2,169 units in December. The company said it exported 10,791 units in December, registering its highest-ever monthly shipment in 5 years.
Bajaj Auto reported a 3 per cent decline in total sales at 3,36,055 units in December 2019. The firm had sold a total of 3,46,199 units in December 2018, Bajaj Auto said in a statement.
Total domestic sales were down 15 per cent at 1,53,163 units as compared to 1,80,351 units in the year-ago month, it added. Motorcycle sales in domestic market were 1,24,125 units last month as against 1,57,252 units in December 2018, down 21 per cent, it added. Exports were, however, up 13 per cent at 1,60,677 units as compared to 1,41,603 units in the same month a year ago, Bajaj Auto said.
Total commercial vehicle sales were at 51,253 units as against 47,344 units in the year-ago month, a growth of 8 per cent. Domestic commercial vehicle sales were at 29,038 units last month as against 23,099 units in the corresponding month last year, a growth of 26 per cent, it added. Commercial vehicle exports were down 8 per cent at 22,215 units as compared to 24,245 units in December 2018, the company said.
Hinduja flagship firm Ashok Leyland reported 28 per cent decline in total commercial vehicle sales at 11,168 units in December. The company had sold a total of 15,490 units in the year-ago month, Ashok Leyland said in a regulatory filing.
Total sales in the domestic market were down 29 per cent at 10,378 units as compared to 14,718 units in December 2018, the company said. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles sales in the domestic market dropped by 40 per cent to 6,369 units against 10,621 units in the year-ago month, it said.
Light commercial vehicle sales also witnessed a decline of 2 per cent in December 2019 at 4,009 units as compared to 4,097 units in the corresponding month previous year, the company added.
Niche bike maker Royal Enfield reported 13 per cent decline in total sales at 50,416 units in December. The company had registered total sales of 58,278 units in the same month a year ago, Royal Enfield said in a statement.
Domestic sales in December were at 48,489 units as against 56,026 units in the year-ago month, down 13 per cent, it added. Exports last month were at 1,927 units as compared to 2,252 units in December 2018, a decline of 14 per cent, it said.
The country's largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp reported 6.41 per cent decline in total sales at 4,24,845 units in December 2019. The company had sold 4,53,985 units in the corresponding month of the previous year, Hero MotoCorp said in a statement. Total motorcycle sales last month stood at 4,03,625 units as against 4,17,612 units in December 2018, down 3.35 per cent.
Chennai-based TVS Motor Company reported 14.67 per cent decline in total sales to 2,31,571 units in December 2019. The company had sold 2,71,395 units in December 2018, TVS Motor Co said in a statement. Total two-wheelers sales were at 2,15,619 units last month as against 2,58,709 units in December 2018, down 16.65 per cent.
