The company had sold 1,22,640 units in September last year, MSI said in a statement.

The sales performance has to be seen in the context of lower base of September 2019, it added.

Domestic sales increased by 32.2 per cent to 1,52,608 units last month, as against 1,15,452 units in September 2019, it added.

Sales of utility vehicles, including Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and Ertiga, increased 10.1 per cent to 23,699 units as compared to 21,526 in the year-ago month, MSI said.

Exports in September increased by 9 per cent to 7,834 units compared to 7,188 units in the corresponding month last year, the company said.

With total sales of 3,93,130 units in second quarter, the company registered a growth of 16.2 per cent over the same period previous year, on a lower base, MSI said.

The company closed the April-September period with total sales of 4,69,729 units, a decline of 36.6 per cent over first half of 2019-20 fiscal, it added.

The auto major's sales performance in the first half this fiscal has to be seen in conjunction with COVID-19 related disruptions, MSI stated.

Toyota Kirloskar sales fall 20 pc at 8,116 units in September

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Thursday reported a 20.45 per cent decline in domestic sales at 8,116 units in September.

The company had sold 10,203 units in the domestic market same month last year, TKM said in a statement.

The automaker, however, added that its wholesales grew by 46 per cent as compared to August, when it had sold 5,555 units.

"We are seeing demand pick up and a lot more confidence in our dealers, thereby witnessing a 14 to 18 per cent growth in orders when compared to last few months. September has been our best month so far, ever since the pandemic hit us in March 2020," TKM Vice President Sales and Service Naveen Soni said.

Factors leading to this can be attributed to the pent up demand amongst customers as well as the onset of the festive season, he added.

The company has recommenced with two shifts a day at its manufacturing facilities in order to keep up with the demand, Soni noted.

Another factor leading to better demand could be attributed to the new launches in the market, he added.

"TKM also announced the launch of Urban Cruiser in September and we have got a very good response from our customers and the market, ever since we opened the bookings for Urban Cruiser," Soni said.

MG Motor reports 3 pc dip in retail sales in September

MG Motor India on Thursday said it has recorded 2.72 per cent decline in its September retail sales at 2,537 units.

The company had sold 2,608 units in September 2019.

"While the fresh booking trend continues to grow steadily for MG Hector and ZS EV, the retail sales were severely impacted in September due to Shraad and Adhik Maas," MG Motor India Director Sales Rakesh Sidana said in a statement.

The wholesale figures were much more than retails in anticipation of the upcoming festive season, he added.

"Although the challenges continue in the overall economy and supply chain, our teams are doing their best to overcome these and we are looking forward to festive season and the launch of Gloster this month," Sidana said.
