Mumbai: The process of filing income tax return (ITR) has been made easier than ever, and is expected to remain so for all the future income tax return filing exercises.
Note that the need of filling up a physical paper form has completely been down away with, except for the super senior citizens, of or over 80 years of age, who are allowed to fill up ITR in physical form or offline. The rest of the assessees are mandatorily required to file ITR online.
With the facility of electronic or e-filing of return in place, there is one more “easy” facility, the e-verification of returns. This means you do not have to take a printout of your dully filled return form, sign it and send it to Central Processing Centre, for verification. You can e-verify it.

The verification of the form is the final step, which means you have submitted your return to the I-T department. Note that you ought to have a pre-validated bank account to e-verify the return.
Another option is to e-verify using Aadhaar based OTP. For this your mobile number must be registered with the UIDAI against your Aaadhaar details. You can also e-verify your I-T return using internet banking.
How to file ITR online
- Log on to https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home. Go to “Log In” on the right top side of the page. Fill in user ID (PAN) and password. Key in the captcha figure. You will be taken to “Dashboard”. Here you will have two options. “Filing of Income Tax Return” and “View Returns / Forms”
- Click on “Filing of Income Tax Return”. Then key in your PAN, assessment year, ITR form number like ITR 1, 2 or 3. Also mention ITR type like “Original or Revised Return”. At the end select “Prepare and Submit Online”
- Note that you have an option using which you can pre-fill details like Nature of Employment, Type of House Property, Bank Details, Tax Relief under section 89 from latest ITR filed and processed by Central Processing Centre
- In the next step you can check heads like General Information, Computation of Income and Tax, Tax Details, Taxes Paid and Verification, Donations-80G, and Donations-80GGA. After you are done with all these steps, you can submit your ITR
How to register as taxpayer on e-filing portal
- You can file e-return on income tax India e-filing portal https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home. But note that you need to first sign up with your PAN details. If you have already done so then just sign in and proceed with your tax filing process. Sign up right away. Here is the URL of the portal: https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home. On the right top side of the home page you can see “New to e-filing”, and exactly below that “Register Yourself” options
- Go to “Register Yourself”. It will take you to this page: https://www1.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-FilingGS/Registration/RegistrationHome.html?lang=eng. Explore relevant options like “Individual”, “Hindu Undivided Family” or “Other than individual/HUF” options. Then “Continue”. You will get to see this page: https://www1.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-FilingGS/Registration/RegistrationControl.html;jsessionid=4AE172687456014C3FB103DC9683D309.D56JTXY3P212M
Here feed details like PAN, Surname, Middle Name, First Name, Date of Birth, and lastly select your Residential Status. And then “Continue”. In next step generate your user ID (which is PAN number) and password and you are done.
