New Delhi: To help users easily identify any suspicious transactions, Google Pay will now send app notifications as well as SMS to inform users each time they receive a collect request to highlight that approving the request will deduct money from their bank accounts.

"We are mindful that at Google Pay, users are entrusting us with their most sensitive asset - their money. We are conscious of the responsibility that comes with this trust," Ambarish Kenghe, Director, Product Management, Google Pay said in a blog post on Wednesday.

"The above security features and a lot more ongoing work in this direction are a small example of how we keep our users safe," Kenghe said.

In the last two years, instant bank-to-bank transfers via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have become the preferred form of payment for millions of Indians, with many users adopting digital payments for the first time.

Google Pay comes equipped with several of Google's security infrastructure including scam protections.

It uses Machine Learning-based scam prevention models, and also displays explicit "scam" or "stranger" warnings if a user receives a request from someone suspicious or not in their contacts, Google said.

'Niti working out proposal to set up desalination plants along coastline to tide over water crisis'
New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) The Niti Aayog is working on a proposal to set up a string of floating desalination plants in marine waters along the country's over 7,500-km coastline, with a view to tide over the water crisis being faced in major urban centres of India.
Recently, several parts of the country, especially Chennai, faced severe water crisis, owing to poor storage in various reservoirs following deficit rainfall.
"The Niti Aayog is working on linking desalination of sea waters with the Sagarmala project," a top government official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Sagarmala aims to modernise ports in the country, so that port-led development can be augmented and coastlines can be developed to contribute growth.
"Recently, Chennai faced acute water crisis. Why can't we put some desalination plants in India's vast coastline and its marine waters and supply it to population centres through a network of pipelines," the official said.
According to the Niti Aayog's report on the Composite Water Management Index released last year, 600 million Indians face high-to-extreme water stress and about two lakh people die every year due to inadequate access to safe water. It, however, added that the crisis is only going to get worse.
It had also predicted that 21 Indian cities, especially Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad, would run out of water by 2020.
The report had predicted that by 2030, the country's water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people.
Last year, the Gujarat government had sought Israel's technical support to set up desalination plants. PTI BKS
