New Delhi: Hundreds of Tea Unions representatives as well as student leaders on Monday staged a protest demonstration in the National capital supporting their charter of demands. The agitators also submitted a memorandum to Union Minister for Labour and Employment Santosh Kumar Gangwar.
"We demand that all the parties should incorporate our demands in their election manifesto. We have been struggling for our legitimate rights for decades but their is no hearing," said Saumik Chakraborty, a tea union leader.
The tea union leaders have also been demanding the implementation of daily minimum wage of Rs 351 for all the tea workers and revise the wage as per provisions of this act in accordance with the changing cost index, along with fringe benefits as per PLA 1951.

In fact, many of the tea gardens in Assam and West Bengal are in dire stage. Not only the tea garden owners but also the state governments have failed to implement the rules and regulations to safeguard the interests of the tea labourers.
On several occasions unrest took place in tea gardens following clash between tea management and tea garden labourers.
