Social media helps to find a missing girl from Kolkata

Social media helped a destitute girl to meet her family in Jabalpur on Saturday. NGO director Sandeep Rai uploaded her photo on Facebook from which her family recognised her.

Jabalpur: It is said that social media has its pros and cons. Today social media became a boon for a girl who was reunited with her family after one year.

A destitute girl was spotted by the locals near Dhamapur in November 2018. The locals informed the police on seeing the girl in the locality for 3-4 days. After which, she was sent to the destitute centre by Dhamapur police station.

The girl was interacting in Bengali hence the Family Counselling Center and Jabalpur police contacted West Bengal police and sent her photographs to the police station for identification.

In Kolkata, all hawkers, vendors and NGO operators are all linked with police WhatsApp group.

When the police forwarded the picture of the girl, an NGO director Sandeep Rai uploaded it on a popular social media site Facebook.

The moment the photo was uploaded, someone commented that this woman is a resident of ward number 18.

Sandeep Rai immediately contacted the parents of the girl and informed them that presently the girl is in Jabalpur.

The director of the NGO reached Jabalpur on Saturday along with the woman's parents where the woman was handed over to the parents by SP Amit Singh in the presence of family counselling centre.

It is said that the woman due to her mental state boarded the train. She had been loitering here and there. Hence, she was sent to the destitute centre by Dhamapur police and her family was found with the help of social media.

The SP acknowledged the importance of social media in today’s scenario. The manner in which the Jabalpur police managed to locate the family of the lost woman is worth appreciation.
