Nagaland to have its own version of NRC

The Government of Nagaland has decided to begin its own variant of NRC from July 10. The exercise is being undertaken to end the issuance of IIC to those who are not eligible.

Kohima: The state government has decided to have its own version of NRC from July 10 on Saturday. The exercise to prepare the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) will start from July 10 and will be completed in 60 days, according to a notification issued by Home Commissioner R Ramakrishnan.

The effort is being undertaken to end the issuance of the Indigenous Inhabitant Certificate (IIC) to ineligible people, the notification said.

An extensive survey will be conducted throughout the state and will be based on existing official records.

The notification directed the district deputy commissioners to ensure that all the RIIN teams were constituted by Saturday and information about the teams made public and also communicated to authorities concerned.

The RIIN teams will visit each house and make a list of the indigenous inhabitants actually residing there.

After gathering all the data, provisional lists will be published for further authentication.

According to the notification, the final lists will be published in villages and wards in the websites of each district by September 11. A period of 30 days will be given to file any claim and objection.

“Once the process is completed, all indigenous inhabitants will be issued IICs and their existing IICs will become invalid,” said a government official.

In case there is anyone who is left out from the RIIN, he/she will need to file an application before the home commissioner, who will get the matter verified and take necessary action for updating the RIIN if needed.

The notification warned that any deputy commissioner or any other officer or authority that issues any indigenous inhabitant certificate in violation of the guidelines will attract disciplinary action.
