1. COVID-19 caseload in India breaches 89-lakh mark

India's COVID-19 caseload went past 89 lakh, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease crossed 83 lakh pushing the national recovery rate to 93.52 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday. The total coronavirus cases mounted to 89,12,907 with 38,617 infections being reported in a day while the death toll climbed to 1,30,993 with 474 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

2. BJP put Cong on defensive over Gupkar alliance: Mehbooba

Stating that the BJP has put the Congress on the defensive about its participation in the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) through false propaganda, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said in today's times, demanding constitutional rights is deemed anti-national. Her remarks came after the Congress on Tuesday said it is not a part of the PAGD, an alliance of several parties in Jammu and Kashmir that is seeking the restoration of the erstwhile state's special status, which was revoked by the Centre in August last year.

3. BJP lawmaker Ram Kadam detained ahead of march

BJP MLA Ram Kadam and his supporters were detained by the police outside his residence in Mumbai, as they were taking out a march to Palghar demanding a CBI probe into the lynching case. "The Maharashtra government is stopping us from going to Palghar. How many voices will you try to shut," Kadam tweeted today morning. The MLA had announced that he would lead a 'Jan Akrosh Yatra' today to demand a CBI inquiry into the Palghar mob lynching case.

4. MP chief minister announces 'cow cabinet'

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday announced that the state government has decided to form a 'cow cabinet' for the protection of cows in the state. Animal husbandry, Forest, Panchayat, Rural Development, Home and Farmer Welfare departments to be a part of the 'cow cabinet', Chouhan announced.

5. Maharashtra Governor challenges contempt move

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has moved the Supreme Court challenging a notice issued by the Uttarakhand High Court on a plea for initiating a contempt proceeding against him. The plea had sought contempt proceedings for his failure to follow the order to pay the market rent for a government bungalow. The accommodation was allocated to him as a former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

6. Congress party in Kerala faces fund shortage

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has been struggling to provide financial support to the Congress candidates, as the first phase of campaigns for local body elections in the state are around the corner. KPCC has requested the candidates to arrange funds on their own personal capacity. Besides, for fund collection, the KPCC would print contribution coupons within the range of Rs 100 to Rs 1,000.

7. Actor Khushbu escapes unhurt as truck hits her car

BJP leader Khushbu Sundar had a narrow escape on Wednesday, as a tanker rammed into the car she was travelling in near Melmaruvathur in Tamil Nadu. The actress-turned politician tweeted that she was safe and would continue her journey towards Cuddalore. She attached pictures of her car, which was badly damaged.

8. 10 killed, 16 injured in a truck crash in Gujarat

At least 10 people died and 16 others were injured when a mini-truck in which they were travelling rammed into another truck on the outskirts of Gujarat's Vadodara city early Wednesday morning, police said. The accident took place at Waghodia circle near the city around 2.45 am when the victims were heading towards Pavagadh in Panchmahal district, Vadodara Deputy Commissioner of Police Karanraj Vaghela said.

9. Chhath Puja grips north India as Nahay-Khay begins

The four-day long Chhath Puja begins today. 'Chhath Mahaparva’ is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm in north India including Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. There is jubilation among the people in Bihar. The first day is known as Nahay-Khay, which marks the beginning of the Chhath festival. The festival of Chhath is celebrated by keeping a 36-hour Nirjala fast.

10. Former India pacer Sudeep Tyagi calls it a day

Former India pacer Sudeep Tyagi on Tuesday announced his retirement from all formats of the game. The 33-year-old played four ODIs, taking three wickets, and one T20 International. He last played for India in 2010.
