Agartala: As predicted well before, Pradyot Kishore Debbarman floated TIPRA (Tipraha Indigenous Regional Progressive Alliance) swept majority in Tripura Tribal Council elections on Saturday restricting the outgoing CPIM from even opening its account. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party succeeded in ending at a respectable total of 9 seats whereas one rebel candidate of the BJP emerged victoriously.
As per the final elections results shared by the state election commissioner ML Dey, Tipra Motha that fought the elections under the registered symbol of Tipraland State Party (TSP) bagged 18 seats. BJP won altogether nine seats and one independent candidate won the elections.
Addressing a press conference after the final results were declared, Dey said, “With no major incident of violence the elections were held peacefully across the state and the polls also recorded a great turn out of over 85 per cent out of total 8.5 lakh above eligible voters." After a high pitch political campaign, the tribal district councils went to the polls on April 6. Although, some specific incidents were reported with the state election commission pertaining to booth jamming, manipulation and threatening to voters of opposition parties, by and large, all the political parties welcomed the way the polls were conducted.
Speaking about the vote percentage, Dey said, all the parties did not contest in the constituencies and still the commission was having a rough idea of the figures. “Once we get the numbers right in figures, it will be circulated among the media persons”, he added.
In terms of the total votes, BJP got 1,37,357 votes, CPI got 91,406 votes, INC got 16,425 votes, IPFT got 77,946 votes, INPT got 68,254 votes, TSP (TIPRA) got 2,74,565 votes, RSP got 1,428 votes, JDU got 1,506 votes and AIFB got 8,712 votes.
The independent candidates succeeded in bagging 51,106 votes out of the 7,33,629 total vote cast. A total of 7,327 votes went to NOTA. Meanwhile, the polls were conducted in altogether 1,244 polling booths spread across the state with more than six thousand poll personnel carrying out the whole process.
Counting for the votes began from 8 am in the morning amid tight security and most of the results were declared within the evening.
