SC dismisses bail plea of accused in MP Congress leader's murder

The apex court dismissed the bail plea of key accused, Govind Singh, in the murder of Congress leader Devendra Chaurasia. Spending time on such a frivolous matter was a waste of the Court's time, said Justice Chandrachud.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed the bail plea of Govind Singh, key accused in the murder of Madhya Pradesh Congress leader, Devendra Chaurasia, observing that 17 cases were pending against him under Section 319.

The bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud observed that instead of arresting him the state was granting him protection. The SC's intervention in the matter led to his arrest later, Chandrachud added.

Justice DY Chandrachud observed that they have no inclination in granting him bail and no games shall be played with the Supreme Court. Justice MR Shah said that he was absconding earlier and a lookout notice was issued against him.

Chandrachud also observed that spending time on such frivolous matter was futile. Making note of the cases listed for the day, the judge also added that 95% of cases were frivolous."Serious matters must be given time," said Justice Chandrachud.

Govind Singh is the husband of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA, Rambai Singh. The victim's son Somesh Chaurasia had moved the top court earlier against MP HC's order.

Advocate Varun Thakur appearing for Chaurasia told the court that the last hearing took place on March 26 and now he is in custody. The matter will be taken up for hearing in July, the Court said.
