Bhatkal (Uttara Kannada): An inquiry into the documents seized from a Pakistani-origin woman arrested from Karnataka's Bhatkal has hinted at a systematic network that might be facilitating illegal entry of people into India. Police said a detailed inquiry will be held to ascertain whether it was a one-off incident or a deeper network has been in operation.

During the raid at the woman's residence on June 9, the police had confiscated her basic documents that help deem a person a citizen of a given country. The police said the accused Khatija Mehrin's (32) documents were all fabricated. While her Aadhaar Card bears her Bhatkal address, her Voter ID has a Hyderabad address and her ration card carries a Bengaluru address. An investigation is underway as to how Khatija procured the three documents without Indian citizenship. The police are also investigating why the three documents bear different addresses.

The intelligence unit had received inputs that a Pakistani woman had been residing illegally in Bhatkal for eight years. Acting on the tip-off, the unit raided her house early last month after obtaining a search warrant from the court. On verification, the police learnt that she had married Javid Mohiddin Rukshuddin, a resident of Bhatkal in Dubai, in 2014 and came to India on a three-month visiting visa. In 2016, she entered India illegally with her children and began residing at her husband's house in Bhatkal. Here, she provided fabricated documents to the local bodies to procure documents.
