PM Modi's instruction comes amid tense situation in Afghanistan and the evacuation of Indian citizens from the country has been going on. PM Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and ordered all concerned officials to ensure safe evacuation on August 17, as per reports.

The MEA also said earlier that the government is committed to the safe return of every Indian national from Afghanistan. The MEA pointed out key challenge is the operational status of Kabul airport.

About 400 people were evacuated on three different flights by Indian government. A special Air India flight from Dushanbe plied another group of 87 Indians and two Nepalese nationals. They were evacuated to Tajikistan capital in an Indian Air Force aircraft.

In addition, the US evacuated 135 Indians from Kabul to Doha in the last few days. They were flown back to Delhi on a special flight. The Taliban entered Afghan capital on August 15 and proclaimed victory over the government after months of violence.
