Governor recommends direct rule in Puducherry

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Tamilisai Soundararajan has recommended President's rule in the Union Territory after the government of Chief Minister Narayanasamy lost majority support in the Assembly.

Puducherry: Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Tamilisai Soundararajan has recommended to the Home Ministry to impose President's Rule in Puducherry.

The Congress government lost the floor test during the one-day special session of the Assembly on February 22. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy tendered his resignation the same day.

President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the resignation of Narayanasamy and his council of ministers.

The Congress party's strength dwindled to 11 against the Opposition's 14 following the resignation of MLAs including a DMK legislator.

Reports said ahead of the floor test Narayanasamy said that former Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi and Central Government colluded with the Opposition to topple his government.

"As our MLAs stayed united we managed to pull off the last 5 years. The Centre has betrayed the people of Puducherry by not granting funds we requested," said Narayanaswamy in the Assembly.
