Australian Hindu Media, the media wing of the Australian Hindu Association, disclosed that the decision to cancel the event was confirmed on Friday. "Khalistan Referendum planned for Blacktown Leisure Centre on 4 June cancelled by @blacktowncc. This is after attempts in @cityofsydney and @parracity were unsuccessful. Zero tolerance for terror apologists in NSW so far. There had been mass outcries by residents against event," a tweet from its handle read.

The Hindu Association also tagged a letter along with the letter which states that the Blacktown Council cancelled the referendum due to potential threat to its staff, its assets and its members. However, the letter also highlights that the Council's decision is in no way an endorsement of or criticism of any political position relating to the internal affairs of India or Pakistan and must not be represented as support for any particular political position.
Earlier in March, police from the Australian state Victoria arrested six men who were believed to be involved in a brawl that broke out between Khalistan sympathisers and Indian right-wing demonstrators. The fight broke out due to unrest over a Khalistan referendum at Federation Square on January.
The arrest came days after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese assured Narendra Modi to take to task those involved in hate crimes in India especially those on religious grounds. During his visit to India, Albanese assured Modi that Australia respects people’s faith. "We don’t tolerate the sort of extreme actions and attacks that we’ve seen on religious buildings, be they Hindu temples, mosques, synagogues, or churches,” he said.
