Raiganj (West Bengal): Throughout the entire day, he deals with the thieves and anti-social elements. After returning home, he has to spend some time with his children. Yet Biplab Kumar Das, a police constable of Raiganj has not given up his first love of his childhood — handicrafts. Besides being a police constable, Mr. Das is also an artisan. Whether it is a piece of wood or a big stone or any discarded piece of laminate, Biplab Das turns these out to wonderful art-crafts.
Though his native place is Islampur, Das now he lives in Raiganj. His wife Shalini Das Saha is a primary school teacher. Mr. Das has a tremendous attraction towards drawing since his childhood. But due to financial crisis he was not able to continue his drawing classes. But the artisan has always been within him. Meanwhile, he has made his own version of the dancing girl of Mahenjodaro with stones and wood. He has also made a deer face-shaped huge wall clock.
Mr. Das says, "From the young age I was very fond of handicrafts. But after joining the police, I could no longer spend time on handicrafts. Then I thought that it would be great if I could make my own artwork on multiple materials, including discarded wood and stone. Earlier, I saw my guru making a bowl with a piece of wood. That has become my inspiration. If my sons and daughters show interest in this subject in the future, it will definitely inspire them to get involved in art."
