Four Maoists killed, three constables injured in Telangana encounter

4 Maoists were killed and three Greyhounds constable injured in an encounter at Mulugu district on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the first Greyhounds injured constable is being airlifted to Hyderabad for treatment.

Mulugu: An exchange of fire between Maoists and Greyhounds Police Force led to the death of four Maoists in Mulugu district of Telangana on Tuesday morning. Three constables also got injured in the incident that took place in Karregutta forest area of the Venkatapuram zone.

Among the four Maoists killed in the firing, included Sudhakar, a division committee member of Jayashankar Mulugu Wajedu Platoon. One of the Greyhound constables, identified as Madhu, was seriously injured in this exchange of fire between police and Maoists. His fingers were chopped off and a bullet hit his chest. Venkatapuram zone Police rushed him to Hanamkonda first then the constable was airlifted to Hyderabad admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Inspector-General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P said, "A team of special anti-Naxal Greyhounds unit of neighbouring Telangana police had launched a counter-insurgency operation along the forest of Bijapur (Chhattisgarh) and Mulugu (Telangana) districts after receiving inputs about the movement of Maoist leader Sudhakar along with 40 armed Naxal cadres in the area."

A joint team of District Reserve Guard and Central Reserve Police Force from Bijapur was also out on the operation to cordon off the area, he further said. Around 7 AM, the Greyhounds team got engaged in a gunbattle with ultras in a forest near Semaldodi village (Bijapur) and Penugolu village (Mulugu). Later, the bodies of four ultras were recovered from the spot, IGP added.

What is Greyhounds?

Greyhounds are a special police forces unit of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Police departments who are specialised in counter-insurgency operations against Naxalite and Maoist terrorists.
