Kolkata: In the wake of the chaos over the effectiveness of Covaxin, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Thursday, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to ensure global acceptance for Covaxin.

Since the World Health Organisation (WHO) is yet to recognize Covaxin, which is manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, those vaccinated by it are not being recognised as 'vaccinated' by several foreign countries. Many people, especially businessmen and students are facing problems and the Prime Minister should immediately initiate international recognition of Covaxin, Mamata wrote in her letter.

However, in India, Covaxin is one of the three vaccines that are currently being used against Covid-19. Vaccination is mandatory for those going abroad and people vaccinated with Covaxin are facing issues. On Wednesday, the Chief Minister became vocal on this issue. “Covaxin is the Prime Minister’s brainchild over which there is confusion in Bangladesh and Brazil as well. This problem should be resolved immediately,” she said.
