Vijayapura man awarded death sentence for killing woman by setting her on fire

The accused had poured petrol on the woman and set her on fire five years back.

Vijayapura: A court in Vijayapura has awarded death sentence to a man for killing a woman by pouring petrol on her and then setting her on fire five years back. The incident occurred on January 27, 2018 and the victim, named Shamashada Akbar Makanadara had died of burn injuries.

The 1st High District and Sessions Court has sentenced to death the accused, Akbar Basha Bagawan, and also slapped a fine of Rs five lakhs. According to police, the accused, who was a resident of Kokatanur village of Sindagi taluk of Vijaypura and the victim, who lived in the neighbourhood had a fight some days before the incident. Akbar had even threatened to kill Shamashada, police said. On January 27, 2018, when Shamshada was sitting at home with her daughter Kausar, Akbar suddenly arrived with a bottle of petrol.

In a fit of rage, Akbar poured petrol on Shamashada and then took out a matchbox, setting her on fire. Shamashada was seriously injured in the incident and was admitted to Vijayapura District Hospital. She, however succumbed to her injuries later. In this connection, a case of murder was registered against the accused in the Sindagi police station. The police investigated the case and filed a chargesheet against the accused.

Satish LP, the judge of the 1st District and Sessions Court, heard the case and examined all the evidence. He concluded that the accused was guilty and ordered him death sentence. Also, the accused has been asked to provide a compensation amounting to Rs five lakh to the family of the deceased. 1st Additional Assistant Prosecutor V.S. Itagi had argued on government's behalf.
