Centre creates new ministry to boost Cooperative movement

A day before the expansion of the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has announced the creation of a new ministry, the Ministry of Co-operation, to realise the vision of prosperity through Cooperatives. In a press statement issued late Tuesday night, the Cabinet Secretariat said the new ministry will provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country.

New Delhi: A day before the expansion of the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has announced the creation of a new ministry, the Ministry of Co-operation, to realise the vision of prosperity through Cooperatives. In a press statement issued late Tuesday night, the Cabinet Secretariat said the new ministry will provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country.

"It will help deepen Co-operatives as a true people based movement reaching upto the grassroots," said the Cabinet Secretariat, adding that a Co-operative based economic development model was extremely relevant for the country where each member works with a spirit of responsibility. The Ministry will work to streamline processes for 'Ease of doing business' for co-operatives and enable the development of Multi-State Co-operatives (MSCS), it said.

The government said it has signalled its deep commitment to the community based developmental partnership and the decision to create a separate Ministry for Co-operation also fulfils the budget announcement made by the Finance Minister.
