Chennai: Chennai has topped the list of cities with the maximum number of CCTV cameras in the world. Cities that follow Chennai include Hyderabad, Harbin, London, Xiamen. According to the figures released in the recently concluded survey, Chennai has 657 CCTVs per square kilometre, making it the city with the highest surveillance system in the world.
Hyderabad has 480 CCTVs per square kilometre while Harbin in China has 411 and London hits the third position in the chart with 399 CCTVs.
Summing up, Chennai has around 2.70 lakhs CCTVs across the city, while Hyderabad has 3 lakhs. In terms of CCTVs proportion with the area, Chennai has topped the list.
A K Vishwanathan IPS, Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai ramped up the installation of CCTVs across the city to curb the criminal activities. As a result, criminal activities in the city reportedly declined.
Around 60 chain snatchers were arrested in the city in past two months with the help of CCTVS.
