New Delhi: Two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi challenged Congress to fight the polls in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's name, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said that his party would proudly do so.
Speaking exclusively to ETV Bharat, Shergill said, "Modi is making such statements because he is scared of the 'storm' that the Congress is going to bring. Rajiv Gandhi has a good name because of the great work he has done. Modi, on the other hand is badnaam (infamous). Congress would proudly fight the polls in Rajiv Gandhi's name."
Claiming that the Modi-led government has failed to achieve substanitial results during its tenure, Shergill said, "Rajiv Gandhi brought about the computer revolution, and changed the course of communication and education. Modi, on the other hand, brought about the pakoda (fritter) and bhagoda (fugitive) revolution."
"In the past five years, Modi has fought the likes of Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, and even Indira Gandhi, but has failed to fight real issues like unemployment and farmer suicides," he added.
Excuding confidence about the Congress' chances at the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, Shergill said that the Congress would put an end to Modi's 'drama' on May 23, just as the BJP governments were ousted by his party in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.
Earlier on May 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had challenged the Congress to fight the last two phases of polls for the honour of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
"Today I challenge Congress and 'namdar' family from this land to fight the coming Lok Sabha polls of Delhi, Punjab and Bhopal for the honour of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who faced corruption allegations over Boforos," he had said.
