Nagapattinam(Tamil Nadu): The vandalised Ambedkar statue of Vedaranayam town in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district has been replaced with a new one within 15 hours by Tamil Nadu government.
The incident took place when a vehicle belonging to an upper-caste person hit a pedestrian from the Dalit community near Vedaranyam police station.
After the vehicle’s driver sought refuge in the police station, Dalit community members pelted stones at the station and torched the vehicle. As the news spread, upper caste members gathered and damaged the Ambedkar statue.
Police have arrested more than 40 people in this case. According to the police, 16 of them are Dalits and the others are from upper-caste groups.
On Monday, the situation was back to normal. Police personnel have been deployed every 50 metres in the town.
The statue was replaced in the early hours of Monday in the presence of Trichy Zone IG Varatharajalu, Thanjavur regional DIG Loganathan.
