The BR Ambedkar statue which was vandalised in a clash between upper caste group and Dalit community has been replaced with new one within 15 hours by Tamil Nadu government.

Nagapattinam(Tamil Nadu): The vandalised Ambedkar statue of Vedaranayam town in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district has been replaced with a new one within 15 hours by Tamil Nadu government.

The incident took place when a vehicle belonging to an upper-caste person hit a pedestrian from the Dalit community near Vedaranyam police station.

After the vehicle’s driver sought refuge in the police station, Dalit community members pelted stones at the station and torched the vehicle. As the news spread, upper caste members gathered and damaged the Ambedkar statue.

Police have arrested more than 40 people in this case. According to the police, 16 of them are Dalits and the others are from upper-caste groups.
On Monday, the situation was back to normal. Police personnel have been deployed every 50 metres in the town.
The statue was replaced in the early hours of Monday in the presence of Trichy Zone IG Varatharajalu, Thanjavur regional DIG Loganathan.

In Nagapattinam district,it is a routine activity to have a clash between schedule caste and dominant upper caste group.Following this, yesterday situation went worst after a car accident.The victim belongs to schedule caste and man who driven the car is from dominant upper community.

The clash between two groups of different caste people leads to violation in the Vedaranayam town.The schedule caste group went after set fire on the car near police station.Dominant upper community people involved in violation and demolished the Ambedkar statue in the broad daylight. Situation started getting worse after this incident and two groups involved in violation.Under the direction of Trichi Zone IG Vaartharajalu,Thanjavur regional DIG Loganathan,750 police was deployed for security in the spot to control the situation.

More than 40 were arrested last night.

Today morning on the presence of Trichi Zone IG Varatharajalu,Thanjavur regional DIG Loganathan,6 feet new Ambedkar statue was placed in the same place by the Tamil Nadu government.
