Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): Unnao District Court on Wednesday extended the police custody remand of the five accused in Unnao rape case where the victim was burnt alive on December 5. The Special Investigating Team (SIT) on Thursday will interrogate the accused from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm in the presence of advocate Sanjeev Trivedi to gather important evidence in connection with the incident.
The five accused were presented before the court amid tight police security on Wednesday.
During the hearing, SIT team in charge SP VK Pandey demanded a three-day police custody remand for further investigation into the matter to which the defence counsel appealed to the court to reject the demand stating life threat. After a long debate, the court approved a 12-hours police custody remand of all the accused.
On December 5, the victim was set ablaze by five accused in Unnao. She later succumbed to her injuries during the treatment in New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on December 6.
Based on the victim's statement, police arrested the five accused, including the prime culprits Shivam Trivedi and Shubham Trivedi, and sent them to jail on December 6.
The incident led to widespread protests across the nation demanding the instant death penalty for the accused.
