Daughters' names on house plaques in Haryana village

In a unique move, Haryana's Kiruri village has put up plaques on houses bearing the names of their daughters under 'Laado Swabhiman' campaign. The initiative was initially started by former sarpanch as he was inspired by PM Modi's Swamitva scheme.

Kiruri: Nuh, a district in Jat dominated Haryana, known for its skewed sex ratio, is breaking the stereotype with families voluntarily putting names of their daughters on nameplates outside their houses. A village with 250 houses and a population of 1200 people, is now identified by the daughters.

Kiruri, a village in Nuh district, is probably the first one in the country where each house has a nameplate with names of daughters. However, similar initiatives have been carried out earlier with an intent to promote progressive thinking but this is the first time, it is being done on a large scale with uniformity.

The progressive step was taken under the initiative 'Laado Swabhiman'(Daughter pride festival) which was started by the former sarpanch Sunil Jaglan. Jaglan was inspired by Swamitva Yojna launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which helped villagers get their property cards.

The selfie of Jaglan and his daughter had also received recognition from PM Modi.

Talking to ETV Bharat, he said," When PM Modi distributed ownership cards to the people under Samvita scheme, then I thought that our daughters should also get an identity. The society does not consider a daughter’s right in her father’s property. But if the father gives recognition to his house through the daughter's name, then it is bound to change the thought process of people in society."

Kuruli's sarpanch Anjum Ara said, "When this image of our village will be presented before the country, people will know that parents are aware here to teach their daughters and build their future.

She believes that her village is following the idea of PM Modi's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign to bring a change.

Manisha, a resident of Kiruri village, said, "Having a plaque with our daughters' name written on has given me immense happiness. It is happy to see that our parents are celebrating 'Self-Esteem Utsav' in the village.

Sunil Jaglan said, "Initially at many places, it was hard to convince families. Most of them were stuck with stereotype and some vehemently opposed it. But things started to fall in place with many families deciding to take the first plunge. The move inspired others to follow the suit."

However, Nuh has a sex ratio of 921, which is higher than most of the villages. It is expected that this campaign of Kiruri village will be successful in conveying the message of celebrating ‘Swabhimaan Utsav’ for all daughters of our nation.
