Raichur(Karnataka): The Karnataka government-run 108 emergency ambulance service has responded to calls from thousands of pregnant women and has helped them to deliver babies inside ambulances in case of emergencies.
There are nearly 750 ambulances in the state which work for emergency-related cases and has been able to assist pregnant women in childbirth inside them. The district of Raichur contains the maximum number of Cases, where pregnant women have given birth to the children in the ambulance.
According to the Health Department, the ambulance staff has assisted 635 deliveries the ambulance from January to September 2020.
While as Raichur ranks first in the childbirths taking place in the ambulance, Kalburgi District holds the second place.
The Ambulance Service was started in the year 2008 by the BJP government Under the 'Arogya Kavacha' scheme for emergency cases.
The health Minister Sri Ramulu had submitted the Idea to the Government and Immediately it was brought to action by CM B.S Yeddyurappa.

The free 108 Arogya Kavacha emergency service can be used for all kinds of medical emergencies, including road accidents and trauma care and for cardiac problems and pregnancy-related emergencies, stroke/convulsions, suicide attempts, poisoning cases, assault/violence, animal attacks, neonatal emergencies, building collapse, fire, burns and hazardous material ingestion and even police-related cases such as accidents, assault, violence, robbery in progress, gambling, property offences, self-inflicted injuries and threat cases.
The government has also appointed drivers and the Staff Nurse in order to assist in case of emergencies.
Currently, there are 750 ambulance in the state and 3500 staff nurse and drivers.
In district Raichur, 23 ambulances are working with a staff of 90 people.
Notably, in Bengaluru, less number of deliveries take place in the ambulances due to a good number of hospitals available, however, in Raichur, the number of deliveries that take place in these ambulances is quite high for the lack of proper medical facilities.
