New Delhi: After four of the six Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Rajya Sabha MPs joined the BJP on Thursday and sought merger of the TDP Legislature Party with the saffron party, the BJP termed the merger as valid and in accordance with the Constitution.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, BJP's national spokesperson G. V. L. Narasimha Rao said, "This has been done in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and there is absolutely no problem for the merger as far as Constitutional aspects are concerned."
The TDP has now been left with only two members in the upper house.
"Y S Chowdary, C M Ramesh, Garikapati Mohan Rao and T G Venkatesh have given the consent to join the BJP and we have accepted the offer. The MP's and our leaders met Venkaiah Naidu yesterday and submitted the letters which he has forwarded to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat. The matter has reached its final stage," Rao explained.
The TDP, which is led by former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, also has three MPs in the Lok Sabha.
The Rajya Sabha has a strength of 245 members and the BJP is the single largest party with 71 MPs.
