New Delhi: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi chaired a key meeting of senior party leaders in Delhi on Thursday.
Congress general secretaries, in-charges of the States, Congress Legislative Party leaders and Pradesh Congress Committee presidents of all the states were present for meeting at the party headquarters in the national capital.
It was the first meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi after she took over as interim president of Congress.
"The meeting has been called to discuss and finalise the preparations of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Membership and Training Program is also an agenda of this crucial meeting", said Madan Mohan Jha, Congress leader from Bihar.
The Congress is focusing on a membership drive and to make it successful each state unit has been given targets.
Party has decided to appoint ‘preraks’, just like the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh do, but with another term.
Both the BJP and the RSS have ‘panna pramukhs’ and 'pracharaks' respectively to spread their ideology and apprise people of the party's stand on several issues.
As per sources, preraks would act as messengers of the Congress at a time when the party is in the dire need to revive its electoral fortunes.
They will help in fortifying the party at the grass-root level and also increasing its outreach.
Congress party has also discussed economic slowdown in the country in the presence of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with almost 90 top leaders of the party.
The party discussed a strategy to target the government over the economy and employment situation.
