New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Central and the state governments to take of the senior citizens living alone amidst the pandemic.
The bench comprising of Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice RS Reddy were hearing a plea filed by the former law minister Dr Ashwini Kumar when they ordered that old-age pension, masks, sanitizers and medicines should be provided to the elderly whenever they are in need of them.
They also added that caregivers of old age homes should also be equipped with these in addition to PPE kits.
The bench also recognised that the government is obliged to take care of its elderly who are living alone. The states should also be prompt in their response to them.
