IMD: North to witness intense rainfall over next 4 days; orange alert for U’khand for Aug 27-28

New Delhi: The weather department Wednesday forecast intense rainfall activity over several parts of north India for the next four days and issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand for

August 27 and 28 and a yellow alert for the subsequent two days.

The India Meteorological Department has four colour-coded alerts -- green, yellow, orange and red --- based on weather pattern.

Orange alert has also been issued for east Uttar Pradesh for August 28 and east Rajasthan (August 29-30).

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Jammu Kashmir (August 27), Himachal Pradesh (August 27-28), east Uttar Pradesh (August 27, 29-30), east Rajasthan (August 27-28), Punjab (August 27-28), Haryana, Delhi (August 27-29), west Rajasthan (August 29-30).

Rains have been wreaking havoc across north India with many rivers flowing close to the danger mark.

In the national capital, the Yamuna was flowing near the warning mark on Wednesday and is likely to swell further with more water being released into it from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana, officials said.

In Uttar Pradesh, the number of districts hit by floods went up to 19 with Shahjahanpur being added to the list.

Bhubaneswar: Fear of flood loomed large over parts of Odisha on Wednesday as heavy rains, triggered by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, battered the state, submerging low-lying areas, snapping road links and claiming at least two lives, officials said.

While all the 30 districts of the state received rainfall of varying intensity since Tuesday, very heavy showers were recorded in nine districts, causing water-logging in many low-lying areas, Special Relief Commissioner, P K Jena said.

The average rainfall of the state in the 24 hours till 9 am was 76.6 mm, while the nine districts recorded more than 100 mm rainfall.

Water enters low lying areas in Mayurbhanj, following heavy rainfall in the area. Meanwhile, water-level of Baitarani River rises at Bhadrak, following heavy rainfall in the region.

Flood situation slightly improves in UP; 19 districts affected

Lucknow: The total number of flood-affected villages in Uttar Pradesh came down on Wednesday as the overall condition improved even though one more district was hit by the deluge.

The number of districts hit by floods in the state went up to 19 with Shahjahanpur being added to the list.

'The flood situation is improving in the state. There are 19 flood-affected districts, where 922 villages are affected, of which 571 are marooned,' state Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goel said.

Till Tuesday, 18 districts with 1,090 villages, including 620 marooned ones, were flood-affected.

The districts affected are Ambedkarnagar, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Ballia, Barabanki, Basti, Deoria, Farrukhabad, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Kasganj, Pilibhit, Kushinagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mau, Santkabirnagar, Shahjananpur and Sitapur.

The relief commissioner said the Sharda river at Palia Kalan in Lakhimpur Kheri and the Saryu at Elgin Bridge in Barabanki, Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia were flowing above the danger mark.

In case of deaths in flood-related incidents, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to provide relief to the family members of the victims within 24 hours, the relief commissioner said.

The chief minister has asked districts, magistrates, to conduct a survey on agricultural losses incurred due to the floods, he said.

The CM also directed officials to set up shelter homes for cattle.

Man killed as heavy rains lash wide parts of Jammu region

Jammu: A 35-year-old man was killed and a bridge washed away as heavy rains lashed wide parts of Jammu region for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, officials said.

A temple also suffered some damages after being struck by lightning while people in different areas faced a lot of problems due to waterlogging after the early morning rains in the city and elsewhere, they said.

Mohammad Shokit was killed when his ''kutcha'' house collapsed due to heavy rains in Kalaban area of Manjakote in Rajouri district, the officials said.

They said flash floods in a stream washed away a bridge at Indira Nagar on the outskirts of Jammu, while dozens of thatched hutments belonging to the nomadic Gujjars and Bakarwals were damaged due to increase in water level in the Tawi river and other streams.

Police also rescued 15 nomadic people, belonging to different families, after they were caught in flash floods in the Ujh river near Rajbagh area of Kathua district, the officials said.

They said several roads and localities in Jammu city, including Gandhi Nagar, Nai Basti, Rampur and Nanak Nagar, faced waterlogging as local residents were seen clearing rainwater from their homes and shops.

Jammu city had recorded 56.3 mm of rainfall during the past 12 hours till 8.30 am, an official of the Meteorological (MeT) Department said and forecast "moderate rains with heavy spell at a few places till tomorrow".

Saktoh, Darhali rivers overflowing, flood-like situation in Rajouri

Rajouri: As heavy rainfall continued in Rajouri district of Jammu & Kashmir, the Saktoh and Darhali rivers were overflowing. The district administration has warned people living near the banks about the possibility of floods and landslides. Earlier on August 21, a highway got blocked due to landslides between Ramban and Ramsu. Moreover, a downpour lashed several parts of the Gandhinagar area in Jammu. A flood-like situation prevails in Rajouri district as Saktoh and Dharhali rivers are overflowing following heavy downpour in the region.

Lucknow: Light to moderate rains along with thundershowers occurred at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours, the MeT Department here said on Wednesday.

It said monsoon is likely to become more active in the state with rainfall and thundershowers very likely at several places on Thursday.

The Meteorological (MeT) Department forecast moderate to severe thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and heavy rains are very likely at isolated places.

Rainfall along with thundershowers is very likely at many places over the eastern parts of the state and at several other places on Friday and Saturday, it said.

15 persons trapped in flood near river bank rescued in JK's Kathua

Jammu: Fifteen persons, belonging to different families, were rescued on Wednesday after they were caught in flash floods in Ujh river in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
The police acted swiftly after getting information about the trapped people of a nomadic tribe in their temporary shelters near the river in Rajbagh area, a police official said.
He said a police team led by Station House Officer Bhopinder Singh immediately rushed to the spot and shifted all 14 marooned people belonging to three different families, including women and children, to safety.
Another person, who was found trapped in his house on the bank of Ujh river in Rajbagh, was also rescued, the official said.
Most parts of Jammu region have been lashed by heavy rains since Tuesday, leaving most of the water bodies swollen and low lying areas waterlogged.

Rain affects normal life in Odisha's Jajpur

Jajpur: Heavy rains affected normal life in Jajpur district of Odisha on Wednesday.

Those who had to venture out of their homes for work faced a tough time due to water-logging. Some people used makeshift boats made from banana trunks to cross water-logged areas. Meanwhile, the water flow in the river Baitarani is expected to cross the danger mark at Swampatna in Kendujhar district due to torrential rains, said the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Wednesday.

"River Baitarni at Swampatna in Kendujhar district of Odisha is rising rapidly and is expected to cross danger level," the Central Water Commission (CWC) tweeted earlier.

According to the India Meteorological Department, rain/thundershowers occurred at Chhattisgarh and at many places over Gujarat state, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and Coastal Karnataka.

"Strong wind with speed reaching 50-60 kmph is very likely over southwest and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea; wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph over North Bay of Bengal along and off Odisha-West Bengal coasts," the IMD stated in its all India weather warning bulletin.

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Regional Centre here has issued heavy rainfall alert in several districts of Odisha today.

Besides, the MeT department has also issued red warning for Sambalpur, Sonepur, Bargarh, Boudh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Deogarh districts due to the low-pressure area over north Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood.

The orange warning has also been issued for the districts of Nabarangpur, Angul, Nuapada, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal and Keonjhar.

Similarly, yellow warning has been issued to Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Cuttack and Jajpur.

With Odisha witnessing an intense rainfall spell, Marshaghai on Wednesday has recorded the highest amount of rainfall in the state.

While Marshaghai recorded 234 mm, the highest amount of rainfall in Odisha in the last 24 hours. Champua sees 210 mm of rain followed by Boudh with 208 mm & Baripada 206 mm of precipitation. 91.6 mm of rainfall recorded in Bhubaneswar, a release stated.

As per the latest rainfall data, nine districts have recorded average rainfall more than 100 mm.

Moradabad: Moradabad-Tehri bypass road was flooded after rising water-level of Ramganga river following incessant rainfall in the adjacent state of Uttarakhand. People were facing problems as they faced difficulty in commuting.

Lakshmi Shankar Singh, Executive Engineer, PWD Moradabad said that flooding on the road has caused a loss of around Rs 3 Lakhs.

"We have a retaining wall at one point, so that portion can not be affected. Beyond that point, we have placed sandbags.

Flooding on the road has caused us a loss of around Rs 3 Lakhs. We have deployed people on different locations to warn people amid the flooding," Singh told Media.

Notably, several roads have been damaged due to torrential rain over the past week in Uttarakhand affecting the movement of vehicles from one city to the other. At present 1,029 villages in 18 districts of Uttar Pradesh are affected by floods, Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said on Tuesday. (ANI)
