Gir Somnath: Usually mangoes are green or red but you will be astonished to know that a unique variety- purple in colour- 'Tommy Atkins' is being produced in selective places in the country.
Initially, the seed of 'Tommy Atkins' was imported from Florida and then they were produced in Nainital's Kaladhungi area.
Black mango has now reached Gujarat's Gir Somnath and is being produced all around the year.
This variety of 'King of fruits' is sugar-free mango and it is becoming a hit among Diabetic patients.
Dinesh, a cultivator of 'Tommy Atkins' told ETV Bharat that over the years, the demand for this Florida-based mango has witnessed a surge.
"It has 75% less sugar as compared to Indian mangoes. This also has very little sugar and is more acidic in taste which makes it a perfect variety of mango for consumption for diabetic patients," told Dinesh.
