New Delhi: At a time when India is aggressively fighting against Covid-19 pandemic, health expert Dr Suneela Garg told ETV Bharat that health complications post-Covid scenario is a matter of serious concern.
Being aware of the situation, the health ministry has taken initiatives for opening post-Covid clinics. Health complications have been reported from persons recovered from Covid-19 across India.
Former Telangana Home Minister Nayani Narsimha Reddy died on Thursday reportedly due to post Covid infections.
"It's indeed a serious issue. We have to address Covid-19 in its correct perspective that means from the time the person gets infected till recovery," said Dr Garg who is head in the department of community medicine at Delhi's Maulana Azad Medical College.
She said that how does a person behave in a post-Covid situation, it depends on his immunity system, age and co-morbidities.
"In younger people, it is generally observed that recovery is faster but for older people, the viral disease takes time. Continuous follow-up is also necessary for a Covid cured person," said Dr Garg.
In fact, cured persons complaining of other complications and infections have been coming from across India. Dr Garg said that a person should be mentally strong to cope up with the situation.
"Whether we talk about doctors support or clinical support, family support plays a very crucial role," said Dr Garg.
She said that a recovered person may again have breathlessness, fever, dry cough and body ache.
"Feeling of not being well is a major symptom of post-Covid infection," she said. Dr Garg said that post-Covid infections could be serious where people can die as well. "However, it depends on individuals immune and nutrition status. It is necessary to treat other ailments while treating for Covid19," Dr Garg said.
She said that the central government has taken initiatives for opening post-Covid clinics where people can take proper guidance and their health conditions could be put under proper monitoring.
ETV Bharat talked with another senior health expert Dr Tamorish Kole on the issue of the post-Covid situation. "After acute covid-19 illness, recovered patients may continue to report a wide variety of signs and symptoms including fatigue, body ache, cough, sore throat, difficulty in breathing etc. This post sequalae is termed as post covid syndrome. A holistic approach is required for follow-up care and well-being of all post Covid recovering patients," said Dr Kole who is the president of the Asian Society for Emergency Medicine. He said that profound fatigue, cardiovascular issues, malaise headaches are major sets of symptoms generally found among people.
"While men face a higher risk of developing severe Covid and mortality, females face a higher risk of suffering from the post-Covid syndrome. Patients with a history of hypotension and chronic lung disease are prone to post Covid complications," said Dr Kole. It may be mentioned here that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has been doing a research study on post-Covid health implications.
