New Delhi: Days after the Narendra-Modi led government revoked special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution, the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold a close-door meeting on Kashmir on Friday.
The meeting, being held on China's call, will be an informal closed door consultation in New York. In the informal consultations, the UNSC members will exchange views on Pakistan Foreign Minister SM Qureshi's letter to it.
Three likely scenarios are expected to play out based on what transpires at the meeting.
Scenario 1
As many countries have already backed India's move, including Russia which is a permanent member, the UNSC might come to an agreement that this is a bilateral issue and will not entertain Pakistan Foreign Minister's letter.
Scenario 2
The UNSC consultation is taking place on China's call which is Pakistan's close ally. There is a possibility that it might remain adamant on holding a discussion at the Security Council.
Scenario 3
In the least likely scenario, UNSC might ask all Security Council members to discuss the matter along with India and Pakistan. However, even if this scenario plays out, Russia can veto it as it has already backed India's move.
