People swarm Kalaburagi chariot festival; defy lockdown

Scores of people had taken part in the Shivalingeshwara chariot festival held in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka on April 8 defying COVID-19 induced lockdown norms.

Kalaburagi (Karnataka): In violation of the lockdown imposed to rein in the coronavirus outbreak, scores of people had taken part in the Shivalingeshwara chariot festival held in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka on April 8.

The festival was organised by one Gurunatha Swamy, the head of the Shivalingeshwara Math, in defiance of Section 144 imposed in the district to stop assembly of more than four people.

Earlier, the Kalaburagi Police had rounded up a few people in Ravoor village for violating the lockdown norms to take out a similar chariot procession.

Kalaburagi is 575 km north of Bengaluru.

Kalaburagi is one of the major COVID-19 hotspots where the first coronavirus death in the country had taken place.
