New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday criticized the union government for not listening to the voice of the common people and said it was its 'forceful opposition' that prevented Narendra Modi regime to distance India from Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and putting the interests of the country's farmers, fishermen and small traders at stake.

Interacting with the ETV Bharat here, Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said his party was 'shouting' for the past 10 days against the RCEP but the government did not listen to them.

Finally, they heard us, Vallabh said, adding that what 'divyagyan' was it that prevented Prime Minister Narendra Modi signing the deal.

"It could have been the third jolt on the Indian economy. We have been shouting for the past 10 days asking them not to do it. The jolt on the economy was demonetization and second was the faulty implementation of the GST," he said.

The Congress leader said the government has realized that it cannot go on ignoring the people of the country.

"They now know that people are rallying behind the Congress' ideology," he said, adding that results of the Haryana and Maharashtra assemblies show that people have understood their game.

He also said that Congress was not interested in claiming the credit for saving the nation from it. Let Home Minister Amit Shah say anything he wants to on the issue.

Intro:New Delhi: As India will no longer be a part of the mega Regional Comprehensive Partnership (RCEP) trade deal, Congress party, on Tuesday, questioned the "last minute" decision of the Government by saying, "How come Prime Minister Narendra Modi got this 'divyagyan' only a few hours before signing this agreement?"

Body:Congress Spokesperson Gourav Vallabh, while talking to ETV Bharat, said, "Till yesterday, Piyush Goyal, who is the Cabinet Minister of the Modi government, was defending the RCEP agreement by saying that it is very much beneficial for our country. It might be possible that he had no idea what PM is going to do. But how come PM decided to opt out from this deal at the very last moment before letting his own ministers to know about it?"

He added, "Congress party was continuously saying that this is going to be the third jolt on the economy, followed by demonetisation and GST. We did lot of press conferences mentioning that RCEP is not going to help neither farmers of our country, nor industries, nor MSMEs, nor dairy industry of this country. Few hours before, PM is compelled to hear our voice because in the last assembly elections of Haryana and Maharashtra, citizens have shown faith in the ideology of Congress. So, the PM has to bow down against the people of our country which was represented by the Congress party."

Congress party also decided to have a 10 day long nationwide agitation against the RCEP agreement. On Monday, the Congress had a meeting with 13 opposition parties asking them to protest unitedly over this economic issue.

However, the Union Home Minister as well as BJP President Amit Shah gave credit to Prime Minister as he tweeted, "India's decision to not sign RCEP was a result of the PM's unflinching resolve to ensure national interest in all circumstances."

Over this statement, Vallabh said, "Congress party never wanted to have credit as we are raising people's voice towards the National interest. This is a victory of millions of farmers, dairy producers, fishermen and MSME's who would have been disastrously affected with this agreement."

Conclusion:The decision has political significance, coming in the backdrop of growing tumult over the state of economy. However, there are indications that the 16 other nations may proceed without India to sign this agreement amid the trade tensions between China and US.
