Bhubaneswar: In yet another unfortunate incident, a pregnant woman had to walk for over a kilometre to deliver her child, in the absence of suitable transport in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.
Bimala Devi, who hails from Dehuri hamlet of the district, started developing labour pains and had to be shifted to the Nangalbenta PHC for her delivery.
Owing to poor cellular network in the region, the woman's family members were unable to contact the ambulance service. Since the roads in the village are also unmotorable, they could not get a private vehicle to the village.
With no other option available, the woman was forced to walk for over a kilometer to the nearest paved road.
A local ASHA worker then hired a private vehicle to transport the woman to the hospital, where she delivered a healthy baby boy.
According to the doctors, both the mother and the child are doing well.
