Guwahati: Under the newly framed “Post-graduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2020”, the central government has made it mandatory for the MD or MS students to go for District Residency Programme in District Health System for a stipulated period of time.

In Assam, the experts have expressed happiness over the development and said that this will help the rural healthcare system.

"We are yet to get the copy of formal notification in this regard. However, this is a welcome move. Most of the hospitals in rural areas in Assam have the necessary facilities and hence it will help the people in rural areas," said Dr Anup Barman, the Director of Medical Education Assam.

He said that the government wanted to make a uniform code for medical education and hence the amendment was done.

"The regulations were there for MBBS as well as for the PG students. However, the regulations used to differ from state to state. Now this amendment was done to make a uniform policy for all the MBBS as well as for the PG students," said Dr Barman.

"Most of the rural hospitals and district hospitals have the minimum facility and this will help the poor people in rural areas," he said.

The women doctors posted in rural areas of the state, however, said that the government needs to ensure safety for the women doctors in the remote inaccessible areas.

It may be mentioned here that Assam has 7 medical colleges as of now with a seating capacity of 1000 students. Another four medical colleges are in the pipeline, which is expected to further increase the seating capacity in the state.
