Vijayawada: A 19-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday, days before the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been scheduled.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), formerly the All India Pre-Medical Test, is an entrance examination in India for students who wish to study undergraduate medical courses and dental courses in government or private medical and dental colleges in India.
According to the reports, the NEET aspirant, hailing from Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, failed to crack the pioneer examination in 2018 after which her parents enrolled her in a coaching institute.
She had been facing extreme pressure of cracking the examination after the Supreme Court decided to conduct the examinations in September this year.
However, her parents denied allegations of putting any pressure on the medical aspirant.
The police have registered a case and the body has been sent for autopsy.
Earlier, the medical entrance examination was scheduled for April, but the unpredictable coronavirus pandemic had forced the testing agency to postpone the date.
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the plea filed by eleven students from eleven states, contended that the decision to hold JEE (main) exam through online mode from September 1 to 6 and NEET UG-2020 through offline mode on September 13 at 161 centres across India are arbitrary, whimsical and violative of the fundamental right to life of lakhs of affected students.
However, the apex court said that the career of lakhs of students cannot be put under jeopardy for long.
It said, "Life cannot be stopped. We have to move ahead with all safeguards and all... Are you (students) ready to waste one whole year? Now, the courts are also going to open gradually for physical hearing. We also have these glass panels now. Life must go on."
