New Delhi: Alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had exceeded his candidature expenditure limit, a delegation from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) into the issue.
The delegation, who met the CEO and submitted a detailed memorandum about alleged 'gross malpractices' by the Prime Minister, during campaign in his Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, remarked that the latter had crossed the Rs 70 lakh limit, usually earmarked for a contesting candidate.
The delegation, which comprised of Delhi Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh and others, wrote to the Election Officer of Varanasi, and claimed that an amount of Rs 1.27 crore was spent for the roadshow.
"About Rs 64 lakh, were spent for ferrying the senior BJP leaders via private jets. On the other hand, 100 others took commercial flights to reach Varanasi at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. The hotel expenses were around Rs 8 lakh, while the expenditure on vehicles was Rs 6 lakh," claimed Singh.
Further outlining on the expenses incurred, Singh maintained that Rs 5 lakh each was spent on food and on-poll accessories, whereas Rs 2 lakh on social media campaign and arrangements for sound system and stage.
He also said that an amount of Rs 20 lakh were spent on train tickets for the party cadres/workers.
AAP has sought an immediate action against the violations and demanded an inquiry.
