Ministry of Railways has denied claims of compulsory retirement being handed out to its employees as a part of a layoff scheme. The Ministry in its letter clarified that the notice issued is regarding the routine performance review of Railway employees and has nothing to do with any sort of layoffs as was being reported.

New Delhi: As multiple reports claimed that the Indian Railways was taking steps to 'reduce a sizeable number of its employees', the Ministry of Railways issued a clarification and termed the reports as 'without any substance'.

"It is a routine exercise which is required to be conducted by the administration in public interest and the same has been conducted in previous years as well. Any information regarding the number of employees being retired is without any substance," the clarification letter read.

Besides, the Railways said that about 1,84,262 employees were recruited in various categories during the period 2014-2019.

Various reports had earlier claimed that Railways was eyeing a major layoff by compulsorily retiring a sizeable number of its employees.

The reports also suggested that all the Zonal Managers were being asked to prepare a list of those who have completed 55 years of age or who would complete 30 years of service in Indian Railways by the first quarter of 2020.

Intro:New Delhi: As the news started circulating over a major layoff is likely to be held in Indian Railways wherein as many as 3 lakh Indian Railways employees can be asked to take an early retirement from all the zones, the Railway Ministry clarified that these reports are "without any substance".

According to the recent reports, a letter has been sent to all the Railway zones to prepare a review list of their employees. However, this will be done only to those employees whose age is more than 55 years.


Body:Calling it a " mere routine review", the Railway Ministry clarified in an official statement, "Letters have been issued to Railway zones/Production units, merely by way of reiteration to conduct a routine review of performance of the Railway employees in pursuance of the service conditions."

"It is a routine exercise which is required to be conducted by the Administration in public interest and the same has been conducted in previous years as well. Any interference regarding the number of employees being retired is without any substance," it added.

According to the sources, Indian Railways in trying to reduce the number of employees in its latest moves, by bringing down the number of more than 13 lakh employees to 10 lakh. Hence, all the Zonal Managers are being asked to prepare a list of those who have completed 55 years of age or who would complete 30 years of their job in Indian Railways by the first quarter of 2020.


Conclusion:Replying over this issue, the Ministry said, " The Indian Railways have recruited approximately 1,84,262 employees in various categories during the period from 2014 to 2019. A further recruitment exercise for recruitment of 2,83,637 persons is underway."
