Migrant workers should be sent back home within 15 days: SC

The Supreme Court directed the Centre and state governments to send all the migrant workers to their native places within 15 days and formulate employment schemes after conducting their skill mapping to rehabilitate them.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday issued a slew of directions in the suo moto case of miseries and problems of the migrants during the lockdown.

A bench comprising of Justice Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MR Shah directed the Centre and state governments to send all the migrant workers to their native places within 15 days.

The top court also asked to formulate employment schemes after conducting their skill mapping to rehabilitate them.

The bench also directed the authorities to identifiy and register migrant workers  who want to go back to their native places. The statistics have to be collected village wise and block wise.

In addition these directions, the Court has also directed to consider withdrwal of all the cases registered against the migrants who have allegedly violated the lockdown orders under the Disaster Management Act,2005.

The apex court had on June 5 has reserved its order on the suo motu case registered on the plights of migrant workers.

The court also directed the Centre to provide additional trains within 24 hours of states making the demand for sending the migrant workers back to their native places.

The states have to submit affidavits on the steps taken by them following the SC's orders by July 8.
