New Delhi: In a major move towards granting women the right to serve in the military on equal terms with men after the Supreme Court on Monday granted women the right to “permanent commission” (PC), and the right to command, BJP Spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi termed it a historic decision.
Saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the permanent commission for women in the army in his Independence Day speech in 2018, she hit out at Congress alleging that the previous UPA regime had opposed the move in the court during its tenure.

Lekhi alleged that Rahul Gandhi has used derogatory language towards the government on the issue. She further added that only if Rahul Gandhi was aware of the facts that successive Congress governments filed affidavits before the courts arguing against granting the permanent commission, he wouldn't have made those remarks.

Lekhi said that women are not crying out for any favour or charity but simply seeking to be treated equally at par with their male colleagues.
