Director-General of India Meteorological Department Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Friday said that very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely to continue over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry today

"Cyclone Burevi lays over Gulf of Mannar near south Tamil Nadu coast. Wind speed is 50-60 kmph. It has remained stationary for past 12 hours. It'll further weaken into depression while moving westward across south Tamil Nadu coast during next 12 hrs," he added.

He said, "There has been extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry under its influence. Very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely to continue over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry today."

"South Kerala & North Kerala likely to receive isolated heavy to heavy rainfall today & tomorrow. As its expected to weaken, gradually wind speed will decrease to 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph tonight over extreme south Tamil Nadu & South Kerala coast," he added.

Heavy rains lash Puducherry

Heavy rains lashed Puducherry and its suburban areas on Friday under the influence of cyclone Burevi. Official sources told mediapersons that during the last 24 hours ending 8.30 AM Friday, Puducherry recorded around 14 cm rainfall.

Several housing colonies and main thoroughfares were waterlogged as a result of the torrential rains while power supply was disrupted for several hours in some localities.

The heavy rain was triggered under the influence of the cyclone Burevi in the southwest Bay of Bengal, which has weakened into a deep depression.

Chief Minister V Narayanasamy visited the rain-affected areas, wading through knee-deep water at some places.

While there was widespread rainfall covering many parts of the state, several regions reported heavy to extremely heavy showers including Kollidam (36 cm,
Nagapattinam district), Chidambaram (34 cm, Cuddalore) and over two dozen areas received between 10 and 28 cm rain.
         

Crops including paddy and sugarcane were inundated in districts including Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Ariyalur falling under the Cauvery delta zone and complete submergence of agricultural fields was also seen as showers continued for the third successive day.
         

Ramanathapuram and Tirukovilur (Kallakurichi district) in southern and northern Tamil Nadu respectively were among the regions that received 7 cm rainfall.
         

While Chennai received moderate rains, Madurantakam near here recorded 10 cm, and rainfall was reported from several other regions including Yercaud in Salem, Sivaganga, Namakkal, Tuticorin, Ranipet and Karur districts as well.
         

Low-lying residential areas in parts of Madipakkam, Velachery, Pallikaranai and Kovilambakkam here and several other urban and rural areas in districts including Cuddalore saw water entering the neighbourhoods and as a precautionary measure, electricity supply was halted in several districts.
         

In view of the heavy showers, the ancient Sri Nataraja temple at Chidambaram witnessed flooding of its inner corridors and photographs showing the inundation surfaced on the social media.
         

The government had already declared Friday a holiday for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, and Ramanathapuram districts in view of the weather system.

Thiruvananthapuram Airport suspends operations 

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport suspended operations for today in the wake of cyclone Burevi. Operations were suspended from 10 am to 6 pm. The decision is part of efforts to ensure the safety of airport operations. However, airlines are advised to reschedule services as per the convenience of passengers. Airport operations will remain open for any emergency situation, said airport officials.

The state has withdrawn the red and orange alert issued in southern districts as the Cyclone Burevi has weakened into deep depression. A yellow alert has been issued in 10 districts on Friday and Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram.

The public holiday announced in five districts has not been withdrawn. The ban on fishing will continue. KSRTC will also run only essential services. Thiruvananthapuram Airport suspends operations from 10 am to 6 pm for today in the wake of cyclone warning.

New Delhi: No changes were reported in the position of cyclone Burevi in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district for the last three hours as of 7 am on Friday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a number three hazard warning sign at the Pamban port due to strong winds blowing at a speed of 55 kmph over the coast.

"The Deep Depression over Gulf of Mannar close to Ramanathapuram District coast remains practically stationary during past three hours and lay centred at 02 30 hrs IST of 04th December over Gulf of Mannar near Lat. 9.1degN and Long. 78.6degE close to Ramanathapuram District coast, about 40 km southwest of Ramanathapuram, 70 km west-southwest of Pamban and 160 km northeast of Kanniyakumari," IMD said.

Heavy rainfall has been predicted in several places under the deep depression, including Toothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Cuddalore, Puducherry and neighbouring areas during the next six hours. As the cyclone crossed over Rameswaram on Thursday and rainfall ceased, authorities reported damaged boats. Two fishermen and one fisherwoman from Pamban were rescued after being stranded due to the storm.

Cyclonic storm ‘Burevi’ over Gulf of Mannar weakened into a deep depression

Chennai: Balachandran, Southern Regional Head, Chennai Meteorological Center, said that the hurricane 'Burevi' which was located in the Gulf of Mannar has weakened into a deep depression now.

"Hurricane Burevi, which is located now in the Gulf of Mannar is currently about 20 km south-west of Pamban, has weakened into a deep depression and would move west-southwestwards and cross Ramanathapuram - Thoothukudi districts during  December night 3 to December 4 early hours with a wind speed of 50-60 gusting to 70 kmph. It may further weaken into a depression by tomorrow. 

"Due to this, it is likely to rain across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rain is possible in a few places. Strong winds with a speed of 50 to 60 kmph are expected in the Gulf of Mannar and coastal areas of South Tamil Nadu. There may be heavy rain in southern and central Tamil Nadu," Balachandran said.

Kerala declares public holiday in 5 districts on Friday

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has declared a holiday in five districts for Friday as the state remains on high alert with heavy rains expected when cyclone Burevi makes landfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest bulletin, has said Burevi may make landfall in Kerala on December 4 and has issued red alert and cyclone warning for south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala coasts.

A statement issued by the state government said a public holiday has been declared for the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki in the state.

Over 2,000 relief camps have been opened in Kerala. "A public holiday for all government offices including public sector undertakings has been declared for the five districts in the state," the statement said.

It, however, said the disaster management authority and concerned services, emergency services and election-related services will function normally. The International airport here will remain shut from 10 am to 6 pm on December 4.

The IMD has predicted that the course of the storm will be through the border areas of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts and the government, along with various departments and the Army, were ready to face the contingencies, the statement said.
