Kerala film producer turns organic farmer

Vijayan Pillai, a septuagenarian who started out as a film producer, has now turned into a full-time farmer. He has transformed the backyard of his house in a quaint little area called West Kallada in Kerala's Kollam district into a beautiful organic vegetable garden.

Kollam (Kerala): Vijayan Pillai, a man who gained immense fame in the Malayalam film industry, has now turned into a full-time farmer. The septuagenarian has transformed the backyard of his house in a quaint little area called West Kallada in Kerala's Kollam district into a beautiful organic vegetable garden.

Pillai's garden boasts of a variety of crops including beans, pumpkins, carrot, lady's finger, and tomato among other vegetables.

While some of these veggies are cultivated in the traditional way, some others are grown in grow bags using Hydroponic technology, a high-tech method of growing plants in water rich in mineral nutrients instead of soil.

Pillai, who started his career as a production assistant in Adoor Bhasi films, has also built a polyhouse also known as a greenhouse made of translucent material like glass or polyethylene where the plants grow and develop under controlled climatic conditions.

This polyhouse is used to cultivate green chillies.

The organic vegetable garden has been attracting a lot of admirers, who visit Pillai's house to have a glimpse of the garden.

And, Pillai plays a good host by giving the visitors a tour of his garden.

Kollam : When the concept of non toxic vegetable is confined to dreams for many, it is a way of life for Vijayanpillai who hails from Kollam. Vijayan's farming at his home in West Kallada has become a superhit across the state. Vijayan Pillai, who started his career as a production assistant in Adoor Bhasi films, is now a full time farmer. 



In the spacious area around his home, pavels, beans, pumpkins etc are ready for harvest. Carrot, ladies finger, tomato are grown in 200 growbags. Vijayan's house Kettidathil has been a shooting location for many movies and serials. Many people come here to see the house and his farming. Another speciality of his farming is the polyhouses that have been set up. The green chillies, nicknamed as Sierra is grown in these polyhouses using modern technology. Hydroponically equipped rain room is another experimental success of Vijayan Pillai.



The rain water having organic elements are pumped to the crops through pipes having fixed diameter from this rain room. Other crops are maintained through drip irrigation. Apart from vegetables, fruit trees are also cultivated in large quantities.
