Students want to make JNU centre of Urban Naxals: Giriraj Singh

Union minister Giriraj Singh criticised the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for protesting and said they want to turn the varsity into a centre for 'Urban naxalites'.

"The demand for the rollback of fee hike is just an excuse. Rs 300 is nothing for the JNU students, nor do they value the amount,"said Singh.

Singh also stated that the reason for the protest was to raise the flag of Urban Naxals, and further called the students 'Tukde tukde gang'.

Congress, BSP seeks probe into 'police action' against JNU student

Congress lawmaker TN Prathapan and BSP member Danish Ali on Tuesday demanded a 'high-level probe' into 'police action' against protesting students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Seeking to raise the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Ali alleged that there was 'lathi-charge' on the students and it was condemnable. "There should be a high-level probe into the issue," he said.

Speaker Om Birla said that the member was not speaking on the issue submitted in his notice and asked him to stick the subject which he had mentioned.

Prathapan also demanded "high-level" probe into "police action" and said the Opposition stand with the students.

The police have denied using force against the students who took out a march to Parliament on Monday over their demands which include a rollback in hostel fee hike.

Around 100 students were detained for allegedly 'showing aggressive defiance' to the directions of the police during their protest.

JNUSU called November 18 as 'black day'

A day after holding a massive protest in the national capital, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union on Tuesday called November 18 as a 'black day', when ordinary students rose up in defence of an affordable public education only to be 'abused, roughed up and beaten up', but not defeated.

In a statement and appeal to the students, the JNUSU said November 18 shall be remembered as a historic day for all the students and youth of this country adding the Delhi Police and its actions, directly controlled by the Home Ministry, are beyond condemnation.

"On the day the Parliament of India sat for its 250th session, with the commencement of the winter session, the national capital saw a brutal crackdown on students. Blood was spilt on the roads of the national capital."

At least 50 students were detained by the Delhi Police after the agitating students tried marching to the Parliament on Monday.

The statement said the students from the JNU took to the streets of Delhi to safeguard public education.

"While JNU walked, its spirit and voice were that of the millions of young students who come from diverse and the most marginalised backgrounds that have entered universities/colleges across India or wish to join one of them.

What has been sparked off in JNU is the defining battle of our times; to ensure universities remain affordable and accessible. No more exclusions, no more discriminations. Universities will be open, it becomes the cradle of the real New India," the statement added.

JNUSU appeals to MHRD to resolve crisis and help students

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) on Monday night shared a memorandum that it was supposed to submit to lawmakers in Parliament as an appeal from the varsity students.

"The students of JNU cannot survive with the present structure of fees that are sought to be pushed down their throat. We urge you to consider our plight and endorse our demands," the JNUSU appealed in the memorandum.

The JNUSU had planned to submit the memorandum to parliamentarians, after a march to Parliament starting from the JNU campus on Monday morning. However, the students were stopped midway by the Delhi Police, which, along with paramilitary forces, blocked their way.

In the memorandum, the students have demanded the Inter-Hall Administration (IHA) meeting be reconvened with JNUSU''s participation, a new hostel draft manual be prepared with consultation of students and for a rollback the entire fee hike.

"The reality of that rollback is that virtually no fee has come down. The monthly hostel and mess expenses of students are set to rise from Rs 2,700 per month on an average to Rs 5,500 a month," the JNUSU contended in their memorandum.

"For the BPL students, the rise is from Rs 2,700 to somewhere around Rs 4,100. The definition of the BPL with an annual income of Rs 27,000 means that they absolutely cannot afford the fee hike," it added.

The JNUSU also targeted the varsity's administration for not conducting a proper dialogue with the students on the fee hike issue.

"The most shameful part of this whole episode is that the university administration is not coming to the table or dialogue with protesting students despite repeated calls and even the intervention of the Delhi Police to mediate," it alleged.

Heavy deployment of police outside JNU ahead of protest march to Parliament
New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) In the wake of a protest march to Parliament by the JNU Students' Union against hostel fee hike, heavy police deployment was made outside the university's campus on Monday.
The agitation comes on the first day of the Parliament's Winter Session, which will end on December 13.
The students' protest against the increase in hostel fee is going on for the past three weeks, even as the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration on Wednesday announced a partial rollback of the hike. The union had termed the decision an "eyewash".
Ten companies are deployed outside JNU, police said. One company comprises 70 to 80 personnel.
The JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA) expressed concern over the deployment of police outside the varsity.
"The massive police deployment and barricading at the gates of the JNU campus, which on the face of it appears to be only for the purpose of preventing the students from taking out their planned march to Parliament," it said.
"Such measures or use of force to thwart the exercise of constitutionally guaranteed democratic rights and to impede the students from peacefully taking their voice beyond the campus would be extremely unfortunate and the JNUTA hopes that no such situation will eventually arise," the association said.
Police officials said adequate security arrangements have also been made along the route of the march.
Police personnel have been deployed at all entry points leading to Parliament, a senior police official said. PTI SLB/AMP AMP
