Jamia students nabbed for protesting against Chennai cops in Delhi

Police security was beefed up in both the new and old houses of Tamil Nadu. About 200 policemen, CRPF personnel and riot controlling forces were also deployed ahead of the protest. But the protesters have arrived the old TN house by 3 PM. As they tried to picket the house, police arrested them.

New Delhi: Delhi police have arrested at least 20 students of Jamia Milia University on Saturday for protesting before Tamil Nadu House against Chennai City Police for allegedly lathi-charging the anti-CAA protesters on Friday.

Sources said that the protesters were gathered before the old Tamil Nadu house (Vaigai Illam) in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi and raised slogans against TN government and Chennai City police.

According to Delhi police sources, police had smelt the protest plan of Jamia students in the morning itself.

Police security was beefed up in both the new and old houses of Tamil Nadu. About 200 policemen, CRPF personnel and riot controlling forces were also deployed ahead of the protest.

But the protesters have arrived the old TN house by 3 PM. As they tried to picket the house, police arrested them.

"This is the soil of Mahatma Gandhi. We should not allow CAA in India. We demand the immediate action on police who attacked the people who peacefully protested against CAA in Chennai," one of the protesting students told the media.

Notably, TN police had allegedly lathi-charged anti-CAA protesters in Washermenpet in Chennai. Protesters claimed that more people sustained injuries in the police attack.

TN Legislative Assembly's Leader of Opposition and DMK president MK Stalin and others have condemned the police behaviour.
