New Delhi: Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced on Independence Day last year, nearly five crore households have received tapped water connection so far, officials said on Thursday.
The Mission to ensure 55 litres per capita per day (LPCPD), was launched by the Prime Minister at a cost of Rs 3.55 lakh crore to provide augmented tap water connection, retrofitting the existing connections, and installing water resources in villages.
"The government aimed to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to all 18.933 crore houses in India by 2024. The one year road map of this mission shows about 4.946 crore houses have received tap connection in the past year," a senior officer with the data section of Jal Shakti Ministry told ETV Bharat.
On the state-wise progress of JJM, the officer said that from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, all the states are eager to implement the scheme.
"Gujarat stands tops in the implementation of this project making 66.21 lakh connections. After that, Maharashtra has provided connections to 53.88 lakh families," the officer noted.

Officials with the ministry also informed that about one lakh connections were provided during the lockdown period since March 2020.
"As migrant workers returned to their home towns, the mission used them for implementing these works. Apart from this, the Village Action Plan was drawn and committees have been set to implement this project," the officer added.
