New Delhi: The son of famous carjacker Manoj Bakkarwala, Ashish Bakkarwala, in his interrogation, revealed that he was following the footsteps of his father and used to idolise him.
"I wanted to be infamous like my father and for this very reason, I committed my first crime in 2017. I was also involved in murder and other criminal activities so that I could become like my father," said 20-year-old Ashish who was arrested for his involvement in recent firing incidents to demand extortions.
"Ashish wanted to become infamous like his father. He has planned to kill a property dealer of his village because he did not pay Rs 1 crore extortion to him," police said.
Ashish and his friends were arrested for killing a man in a fit of rage and throwing his body in the Bawana Canal. He was out on bail since February 2020 but soon started threatening people for extortion again after being granted bail.
The Special Cell of Delhi police apprehended Ashish after a brief exchange of fire on Wednesday who carried a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head. Ashish received a bullet injury on his leg after the police team fired in self-defence.
"Ashish is the son of Manoj Bakkarwala, who was involved in more than 60 criminal cases, mostly of carjacking and firing upon police personnel. He idolised his father as he was fascinated by his criminal life and wanted to become like him," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Special Cell, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
Manoj Bakkarwala was previously involved in over 60 criminal cases, mostly of carjacking and firing upon police personnel, police said.

Police had received information that Ashish would come near Ram Chowk, Rohini between 4 am to 5 am to meet his associates, a senior police officer said.
"Thereafter, a trap was laid and one person was spotted on a scooter around 4.20 am. When police intercepted his scooter, he left the vehicle, whipped out a pistol and fired at them. Police also fired and one bullet hit on the leg of the accused, following which he was apprehended," Yadav added.
The police team recovered three live cartridges and one pistol from him. During interrogation, Ashish revealed that he had planned to kill a property dealer of his village as he didn't pay Rs 1 crore as extortion money.
After being granted bail, Ashish met his friends and started threatening people in order to get extortion money. In his confession to the Police, Ashish stated that on May 17, he along with his associate Amit had opened fire on the house of one Satpal, a resident of Bakkarwala, and demanded Rs 1 crore as extortion money. Soon after the incident, he also threatened a doctor and demanded Rs 1 crore as extortion money.
Cops are the lookout of other accomplices of Ashish who were also involved in the theft and robbery.
