New Delhi: Army chief General Bipin Rawat has been appointed India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on a three-year term, according to a government order issued late on Monday evening.
General Bipin Rawat was commissioned into the Indian Army in Dec 1978 and is set to retire on December 31.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had, on December 24, approved the creation of the CDS position, who will be the single-point military adviser to the government, as suggested by the Kargil Review Committee in 1999.
