Parliamentary panel on IT pays tribute to Pranab Mukherjee

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology on Tuesday adopted a condolence resolution paying tributes to former President Pranab Mukherjee and was adjourned for the day.

"The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology met today, adopted a condolence resolution paying tribute to our departed former President Pranab Mukherjee, and adjourned," said Congress MP Shashi Tharoor who heads the panel. 

He said that the parliamentary standing committee meeting on Wednesday on other issues will happen as scheduled. "The issues on the agenda will have to be deferred to another date. Tomorrow's meeting (on other issues) stands," he added.

The ashes of former President Pranab Mukherjee immersed in Ganga in Haridwar by his son Abhijit Mukherjee on Tuesday. Earlier today, the former President was cremated with full military honours on Tuesday afternoon at the Lodhi Road crematorium following a strict Covid-19 precautionary protocol.

Mukherjee remembered his association with Bidyanagar College where he taught for 5 years: Former colleague

Former president Pranab Mukherjee had never forgotten Bidyanagar College in South 24 Parganas district where he had taught political science and

history for five years in the 60s, his former colleague said.

Mukherjee's former colleague Prodyot Mondal said on Tuesday, he was very punctual and became popular among students for his command over Indian Constitution, knowledge of historical events and his simplicity.

The former president had taught at the college located in Amtala between 1963 and 1968. For some time, he was also the acting principal of the college.

Mukherjee left the institute, some 30 km from Kolkata, to join politics in 1968.

Local panchayat leader and Mukherjee's former student Swapan Roy said, "He (Mukherjee) was always close to his students. He impressed us as a teacher and we remember him for his simplicity and knowledge."

Principal of the college Surya Prakash Agarwal said, Mukherjee was in regular touch with the college authorities even before imposition of lockdown.

Bengali film fraternity mourned the death of former President Pranab Mukherjee and said he was a humble soul who loved watching films amid his hectic

schedule.

Film makers Srijit Mukherji and Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay, and actors Prosenjit Chatterjee and Dev remembered the Bharat Ratna awardee as one who never forgot his roots.

Srijit Mukherji said that he had met the former President at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the screening of'Jaatishwar' and during the National Award ceremony for

'Chotushkone'.

Director Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay also remembered the screening of his 'Muktodhara' at Rashtrapati Bhavan and Mukherjee's interest in films.

Farooq Abdullah expresses grief over demise of ex-President Pranab Mukherjee

National Conference President and Member of Parliament Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee who breathed his last at a hospital in Delhi.

With great sorrow, I received the news of the unfortunate passing away of Shri Pranab Mukherjee Ji, a thorough gentleman, a democrat and a statesman. His contribution towards the nation-building will be remembered for all the times to come, Abdullah said.

The NC president expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

A legend has left us; he has had a chequered political career, wherein he got to serve the country in various capacities. An iconic figure in politics, he belonged to the fast diminishing tribe of politicians who are widely respected across the political spectrum. I join the country in paying homage to him, he said.

NC vice president Omar Abdullah, while condoling Mukherjee's demise said, whenever he met the former President, he found their interactions memorable.

His encyclopaedic memory meant he always had an anecdote to make the point under discussion. The last of the generations able to reach across the political aisle, I pay my earnest homage to him. I also express unison with the bereaved family, friends and associates of his in their hour of grief. I pray for peace to the departed soul as well," Omar Abdullah said.

Scores of people pay tribute to Pranab at ancestral temple

An oil portrait of former president Pranab Mukherjee graced the wooden chair, on which he would sit and chant shlokas at his ancestral temple in Birbhum during Durga Puja, as scores of people lined up to offer floral tributes and light candles in memory of their beloved 'Poltu da'.

Grief-stricken neighbours and family members, who had been holding yagnas for Mukherjee's recovery over the past three weeks, milled around his residence 'Kamada Kinkar Bhavan' at Miriti village on Tuesday, most of them recounting

how the statesman touched their lives in one way or the other.

"The village has lost its guardian," Bipattaran Mukhopadhyay, the family priest said.

"We are lucky that this great son of the country hailed from our village; his demise has left a void that cannot be filled," said Karuna Shankar Roy, a middle-aged resident of Mirati.

Assam Assembly pays tributes to Mukherjee

The Assam Assembly on Tuesday paid tributes to former President Pranab Mukherjee and termed his death as an irreparable loss to the country.

After the Question Hour, Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami adjourned the House for five minutes when he, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, other ministers and MLAs of all parties paid floral tributes on the portrait of Mukherjee.

After the House reassembled, the members observed a minutes silence in memory of the Bharat Ratna awardee.

"We express our deepest condolences to our beloved former President Pranab Mukherjee. His death is a big and irreparable loss to the country," Goswami said.

Jangipur that helped Pranab shed tag of 'rootless wanderer' mourns its 'guardian'

Pranab Mukherjee towered over the country's political landscape for decades but it was Jangipur that helped the scholar-statesman shed the tag of a

"rootless wanderer".

The town in West Bengal was in mourning on Tuesday, the day the mortal remains of its most illustrious representative in Parliament were cremated, and he became a memory.

The constituency twice elected him to the Lok Sabha after two failed attempts to enter the Lower House.

Mohammed Sohrab, the poll agent of Mukherjee in 2004 and 2009, said Jangipur has lost its "guardian".

"He was very passionate about the development of Jangipur. He used to say that happiness derived from winning the votes of the masses is unparalleled. Irrespective of who the MP or the MLA is in the constituency, Pranabda was the

guardian of Jangipur since 2004."

After Mukherjee became the president, his corporate executive son Abhijit won the seat twice in 2012 and 2014, a reflection of the enduring charm and charisma of the Congress warhorse.

Will convert a floor of our home into museum-cum-library in Pranab Mukherjee's memory: Abhijit

Former President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit, a parliamentarian, Tuesday said he plans to convert one floor of their house in West Bengal's Jangipur into a museum-cum-library in the memory of the departed leader.

Abhijit also said he would like the government to issue a postage stamp in honour of his father.

Mukherjee, who had tested positive for coronavirus and had been in a coma after a brain surgery earlier this month, passed away on Monday evening at the Army's Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi. He was 84.

A postal stamp I request If the government agrees, I will be very happy, he said.

And on personal side, I am planning to convert the first floor or the ground floor of the house my father constructed at Jangipur into a museum-cum-library, Abhijit said.

I will gather his personal belongings, particularly the vast number of books, gift items like plaques and put them into that museum, he said.

Abhijit, however, rued his father could never stay in that house for longer durations. By the time the house was constructed, he had gone to a bigger house, the President's House, he said, as the elder statesman left on his final journey.

Mizoram assembly pays tribute to Pranab Mukherjee among others

The Mizoram assembly, on the first day of its three-day session on Tuesday, paid rich tributes to former president Pranab Mukherjee.

Remembering Mukherjee, who died at the Army Research and Referral hospital in New Delhi on Monday, Chief Minister Zoramthanga said, his demise was a great loss for the nation.

The "veteran parliamentarian", who left active politics after he became president of the country in 2012, remained a "great leader" throughout his life, the chief minister said.

Besides Mukherjee, the chief minister also made obituary references to five former members of the House, including former speakers Hiphei and Rokamlova, who died between March and July.

Opposition leader Lalduhoma and six other members, including minister R Lalzirliana and Congress Legislature Party (CPL) leader Zodintluanga Ralte also condoled the death of Mukherjee and the five former MLAs.

A minute's silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls.

Puducherry Assembly Speaker V P Sivakolundhu and Legislators paid homage to former President Pranab Mukherjee at the Assembly premises on Tuesday.

Condoling the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat described him as a "guide" for the Sangh and said he didn't believe in political untouchability.

New Delhi: The last rites of former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee is set to be conducted on Tuesday and his body will be laid in state at his official residence here in the national capital to enable people to pay their last homage.

According to a note issued by the Ministry of Defence, the wreath-laying schedule for official dignitaries will be from 9:15 am to 10:15 am for official dignitaries and 45 minutes for other dignitaries. This will be followed by an hour's time for the general public to pay homage to the late President at 10 Rajaji Marg. 

The MoD note also mentioned that owing to the COVID-19 related protocols, the mortal remains of the late President will proceed in hearse van instead of the normal gun carriage. All protocols/guidelines in regard to COVID-19 preventive measures will be followed, according to the Ministry.

Mukherjee passed away on Monday at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Hospital where he was admitted earlier this month and had undergone surgery for the removal of a clot in his brain. He was 84. He was admitted to the Army Hospital in Delhi on August 10 and had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Taking to Twitter his son Abhijit Mukherjee confirmed the news.

"With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas and prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You."

Meanwhile, the central government announced that seven days of state morning will be observed throughout India from August 31 to September 6, inclusive of both these dates as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary.

During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout India, where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.

Pondy Speaker, legislators pay homage to Pranab Mukherjee

Puducherry Assembly Speaker V P Sivakolundhu and Legislators paid homage to former President Pranab Mukherjee at the Assembly premises on Tuesday.

Apart from the Speaker, Deputy Speaker M N Bhalan, Welfare Minister M Kandasamy, opposition AINRC legislator N S J Jayabal, legislators belonging to the ruling Congress and officials of the Assembly Secretariat paid floral tributes to a portrait of the veteran leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that former president Pranab Mukherjee would be remembered by generations for his efforts towards India's progress as he paid his last respects to him.

Mukherjee (84) was cremated with full state honours at the Lodhi Road electric crematorium in the afternoon.

Mukherjee died on Monday evening at the Army's Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi cantonment following a 21-day battle with multiple ailments.

Pranab Mukherjee was like 'guide' for us: RSS chief

Condoling the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat described him as a "guide" for the Sangh and said he didn't believe in political untouchability.

Recalling the meeting with Pranab Mukherjee, the union chief described him as a man of 'warm and generous nature'. 

Bhagwat said that Pranab Da was like an elderly guide for him and he used to listen to him quietly. 

He used to make me forget that I am talking to President of India. It was in his nature to make everyone, his own, despite political differences. He'll be remembered always, Mohan Bhagwat said.

Bhagwat further described him as a great thinker and said that he had the discretion to use his information in the right direction.

New Delhi: The last rites of former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee is set to be conducted on Tuesday and his body will be laid in state at his official residence here in the national capital to enable people to pay their last homage.

According to a note issued by the Ministry of Defence, the wreath-laying schedule for official dignitaries will be from 9:15 am to 10:15 am for official dignitaries and 45 minutes for other dignitaries. This will be followed by an hour's time for the general public to pay homage to the late President at 10 Rajaji Marg. 

The MoD note also mentioned that owing to the COVID-19 related protocols, the mortal remains of the late President will proceed in hearse van instead of the normal gun carriage. All protocols/guidelines in regard to COVID-19 preventive measures will be followed, according to the Ministry.

Mukherjee passed away on Monday at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Hospital where he was admitted earlier this month and had undergone surgery for the removal of a clot in his brain. He was 84. He was admitted to the Army Hospital in Delhi on August 10 and had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Taking to Twitter his son Abhijit Mukherjee confirmed the news.

"With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas and prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You."

Meanwhile, the central government announced that seven days of state morning will be observed throughout India from August 31 to September 6, inclusive of both these dates as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary.

During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout India, where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.
