'Father of Indian Boxing' Hawa Singh’s Biopic being promoted by Salman Khan

The first Gold Medallist from the country at the Asian Games, known as the 'Father of Indian Boxing', Hawa Singh Shyoran is having a biopic made on his life. The movie shall see Sooraj Pancholi starring as the hero while the movie is being promoted by Salman Khan.

Bhiwani: There is something special about the red soil in Bhiwani district. What else could be the reason for so many of the sons and daughters bringing pride to the district, not only nationally, but internationally too. Probably that is the reason for Bollywood reaching the area, for after the Dangal girls (Phogat sisters), a biopic of Hawa Singh Shyoran, the first Asian Games Gold Medalist (known as the father of Indian Boxing), is being made.

Who is Hawa Singh?

Born in 1937, Captain Hawa Singh Shyoran was the first Indian boxer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, he too is a son of the soil of Bhiwani, originally a soldier in the Army, Hawa Singh entered the 'squared circle' after emerging from the trenches.

• Record of being national champion 11 consecutive times

• National champion from 1961 to 1972

• Winner of Dronacharya Award and Arjuna award

Hawa Singh’s son is proud of his father

Regarding his father’s biopic, Bhim Awardee Boxing Coach Sanjay Shyoran told correspondents that he was immensely proud of his father. A person, who became a legend despite hailing from a poor family in an ordinary village, served the country from inside the boxing ring and got the recognition for the sport in the Indian subcontinent, his son Sanjay is understandably very excited about his father’s biopic.

The third generation of Captain Hawa Singh’s family is in boxing, which is a record unto itself. Captain Hawa Singh’s son Sanjay Shyoran is a recipient of the Bhim award as a boxer, who is now running a boxing academy in his legendary father’s name. The special thing about his academy is that every child in his academy is trained for free. Boxers come here and keep training in the mornings and during the evenings.

Olympic qualifier Pooja Rani too has emerged from Sanjay Shyoran’s academy. Apart from this, Hawa Singh's granddaughter and Sanjay’s daughter Nupur Shyoran,16, is also making quite a name for herself in the international boxing arena.
